Contamination of the Thames (2021)

Contamination of the Thames is a 12-week photographic project created between September and December 2021. Based around the concept of water pollution in the River Thames within various areas of Kent and London.

It aims to highlight and bring awareness to the global issue of climate change, present within the current geological period of the Anthropocene caused by human activity. From household and commercial waste, industrial waste from factories and warehouses, and fossil fuels from cargo ships. All of which, have an array of negative impacts on the ecosystem of the Thames and the species living within it as well as the overall environment.

The most common polluting material found floating in the river according to a range of online studies conducted within the last four years. Is plastic. More specifically, microplastics from single-use objects like bags, drink bottles, straws and wet wipes that have gradually broken down over time.

On Tuesday the 7th of December 2021 at Copeland Gallery with support from London South Bank University, the final work from this project was featured in a photography exhibition called .COHESION . Which was based around the themes of bodies of water, climate change and the Anthropocene.
